What You Missed: Rise & Shine Breakfast at Barnes Air National Guard Base
The Springfield Regional Chamber recently welcomed members for a special Rise & Shine Breakfast at Barnes Air National Guard Base, offering attendees an inside look at one of Western Massachusetts' most important military installations during a pivotal moment in its history.
Hosted by Colonel Michael "Shot" Glass, Commander of the 104th Fighter Wing, the morning featured an engaging presentation on the mission of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, the future of Barnes, and the ongoing conversion to the F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft, marking a new era for the 104th Fighter Wing.
A Historic Transition for Barnes
As the wing continues to transition to the F-35 aircraft, Barnes is officially entering the next generation of air defense. Colonel Glass shared how the transition from the F-15 to the F-35 expands the Wing's capabilities while ensuring Barnes remains a critical component of the nation's defense for decades to come.
More than a new aircraft, the F-35 represents a long-term investment in both national security and the future of Barnes.
Protecting the Northeast
Attendees also learned about the 104th Fighter Wing's homeland defense mission and its responsibility for protecting the skies over New England. Colonel Glass highlighted the dedication of the more than 1,000 Airmen who stand ready to respond whenever called upon, reinforcing the vital role Barnes plays in protecting the region and the nation.
A Major Investment in Our Region
The ongoing transition to the F-35 is driving significant infrastructure improvements across the base, including new aircraft shelters and infrastructure upgrades, representing a major long-term investment in Barnes and creating opportunities for businesses throughout the region. Colonel Glass encouraged local companies involved in construction, engineering, technology, and related industries to stay engaged as future projects continue to develop.
More Than Military Service
One of the morning's most meaningful takeaways was the reminder that the Air National Guard is deeply rooted in the local community. Many members of the 104th Fighter Wing live and work throughout Western Massachusetts, serving their communities in civilian careers while also serving their country.
Colonel Glass noted that members of the Guard are not only military professionals, but also business owners, educators, healthcare professionals, first responders, and community leaders—making Barnes an integral part of the region it protects.
An Exclusive Look Behind the Fence
Following breakfast, attendees were treated to a guided tour of the base, where they had the rare opportunity to view the wing’s conversion efforts and learn more about the mission behind one of the world's most advanced fighter jets.
Thank you to Colonel Glass, Chief of Staff Chris Riga, Senior Master Sergeant Kathleen Mendez, and the entire team at Barnes Air National Guard Base for their hospitality and for providing our members with such an informative and memorable experience.
Rise & Shine breakfasts continue to provide Chamber members with unique opportunities to hear directly from the leaders and organizations shaping Western Massachusetts. We look forward to seeing you at our next breakfast event!
