Here’s What You Missed at the Springfield Regional Chamber's 2026 Mayor’s Forum
If you weren’t able to join the Springfield Regional Chamber’s recent Mayor’s Forum, you missed an insightful and timely conversation that brought together municipal leaders from across Western Massachusetts to discuss the issues shaping communities throughout the region.
Moderated by longtime news anchor Dave Madsen, the discussion explored topics including education funding, municipal finance, healthcare costs, infrastructure, economic development, and quality of life. While each city and town faces unique challenges, the conversation highlighted many of the shared pressures local governments are navigating today.
Mayors included:
Mayor Joshua A. Garcia, Holyoke
Mayor Christopher Johnson, Agawam
Mayor Michael A. McCabe, Westfield
Mayor William Reichelt, West Springfield
Mayor Salem Derby, Easthampton
Mayor John Vieau, Chicopee
A major theme throughout the forum was the challenge of balancing rising costs with the need to maintain essential services such as schools, roads, public safety, senior services, and infrastructure. Several mayors spoke about the impact of healthcare costs, school funding formulas, transportation needs, and budget limitations on their communities.
At the same time, the discussion also highlighted the momentum happening across the region, including investments in schools, housing, recreation, downtown development, and community programming designed to improve quality of life and support long-term growth.
The forum ended on a genuinely heartwarming note, as each mayor shared something they were proud of happening in their community. From exciting projects and neighborhood improvements to local events and the people who make their cities and towns special, the closing remarks brought a sense of hope and community to the conversation. After discussing many serious challenges throughout the morning, it was a meaningful reminder that there is still so much positive momentum, pride, and progress happening across our region.
