Compassionate mental health therapy in Springfield, MA serving individuals, couples, and families throughout Western Massachusetts.

It’s difficult to fathom the first edition of the Weekly Republican was published September 8, 1824.  Founded by Samuel Bowles, the newspaper’s name was drawn from the owner’s belief in a government run by the common people, not the aristocracy.

Bowles poled the newspaper’s original press up the Connecticut River from Hartford.  The press now finds its home at the Springfield Museums after spending more than two decades at The Republican main offices here at 1860 Main Street.

To understand what Samuel Bowles and others built and sustained is also to comprehend what makes America great. The book we will be publishing is their story, but also the story of their colleagues, living and dead. And of the city called Springfield. And of every woman, man and child who has lived in the broader Western Massachusetts community.

When Samuel Bowles founded the newspaper in 1824, he not only was publisher, but also editor, typesetter, and printer. Today, The Republican’s business model has transformed into something, including the most sophisticated digital news, which would surely confound the first of the three generations of Samuel Bowles who guided the newspaper.

What hasn’t changed through the decades is The Republican’s passion for truthful, hard-hitting journalism – telling the news of the day from Springfield and around the world, and helping local citizens make informed decisions about the direction of their community and their democracy.

The newspaper was sold in 1960 to a family headed by another Samuel – Samuel I. Newhouse of New York. The Newhouse family still owns The Republican today, but leaves the journalism to people who live here, who seek to serve the community with truthful information, delivered to readers without fear or favor.
